Entry Requirements

The Master's Programs
In addition to meeting the general CEU admissions requirements (see section on Admissions Information), applicants to either of the two Master's programs at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy must write a statement (maximum 350 words) addressing: a) the origins of their interest in environmental issues;

b) how they hope to benefit from the program;
c) their future career plans; and
d) their relevant special interests.

Successful candidates will also normally have some work experience in a field related to the environment. Applicants to both the Masters Programs and MESPOM must have at least a Bachelor's degree. Students accepted on the department's Master's programs normally have first degrees in subjects related to environmental sciences, policy or management such as biology, geography, chemistry, engineering, business administration or economics. Candidates with other first degrees will also be considered if they show a commitment to environmental issues, usually through work experience.

The Doctoral Program
Applicants for the Doctoral Program are required to possess a Master's degree or equivalent in an environment-related field, such as natural or social sciences, engineering, economics, law or management.  They must also meet the relevant language proficiency and CEU admissions requirements. The Department's admission criteria include intellectual excellence and the potential for making original contributions to knowledge in the field through rigorous research.  Further information and advice about 2011 entry to the PhD program is available here.

Please note that, in addition to standard CEU admissions requirements, the department requires applicants to submit a (max 2,000 word) research proposal. This is an important part of the selection process, since we use it to form a judgement both about the applicant's ability to conduct PhD-level research and about his/her fit with the department's research profile; applicants are therefore encouraged to pay particular attention to this element of their application package.
