Center for Environment and Security (CENSE)

Director: Alexios Antypas

CENSE - the CEU Center for Environment and Security - is a joint initiative of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy, Deparment of Public Policy, Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology and the Department of International Relations and European Studies.

The mission of the CEU Center for Environment and Security is to generate knowledge and provide policy, management and capacity strengthening solutions to problems of human vulnerability, caused
by environmental degradation and scarcity of natural resources. CENSE takes a multi-disciplinary approach to studying the nexus of social and environmental risk in partnership with academic institutions, governmental and intergovernmental organizations, and civil society. In order to implement its mission, CENSE conducts research projects, organizes training courses, supports curriculum development at CEU and beyond, and organizes public meetings and other outreach events.

The 3CSEP is an interdisciplinary research and educational center at CEU, whose mission is to foster solutions to climate change and sustainable energy challenges while advancing the implementation of development agendas. The 3CSEP also provides a platform for academic, outreach and educational activities at CEU in these fields. Research and education at 3CSEP is focused on global and regional problems. Effective work related to climate change and sustainable energy must cross traditional disciplines and clusters of thinking. Thus, the center is committed to an interdisciplinary approach as well as integrating knowledge and methods from the natural, technical, social sciences, and humanities. Projects often target the interface among technology, society, policy and politics. Several of our projects directly advise national and trans-national governments (EU, UN) and provide guidance for international organizations and networks.

The Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy is one of the collaborating centers in the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) Project, launched by UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) in 1995. The GEO project has two components:
. A global environmental assessment process that is cross-sectoral, participatory and consultative.
. GEO outputs, in printed and electronic formats, including the GEO report series.

The Collaborating Centers play a very important role in the GEO reporting process, being responsible for research, writing, and review of the regional parts of the reports and also providing specialized expertise. Since 1997, three GEO reports have been published. CEU has participated in the GEO process since 1996. You can visit the project's Web page.

The department has a Systems Laboratory located in the CEU Residence and Conference Center. The Laboratory aims at modeling of environmental and social systems using various hardware and software facilities, GIS applications and environmental data processing packages. The Laboratory also hosts the Environmental Collection. The Laboratory Manager is Viktor Lagutov.
